What Local Services Ads ranking really uses.

Bid, reviews, response time, photos, verification and relevance. Marking leads Booked and Completed is still worth the habit, but Google files it under optimization, not ranking.

Google ranks Local Services Ads in an auction that weighs your bid and your profile quality: rating, number of reviews, average response time, high-quality images and completed verification checks. Responsiveness and relevance to the search count too. Marking leads Booked and Completed is worth the habit, but Google documents it as helping its automated systems optimize your campaign, not as a ranking factor, and it publishes no booking-rate threshold.

What we told a mentee, and what holds up

On a mentoring call with a roofing and exteriors franchise branch, before its first lead had arrived, we told the team to mark every lead that books an appointment as booked, and every finished job as completed. We also told them to keep asking for reviews and to reply to them, especially the ones asking for improvements. Our reasoning on the call was that Google gives more leads to providers who show they work the leads they get.

Checked against Google's documentation today, the advice holds, but the reasoning needs tightening. Lead statuses are documented as an optimization input. Reviews are a documented ranking factor. Replying to reviews is good practice, but Google's Local Services pages don't list it as a ranking factor.

What Google says moves your rank

Answer the phone, earn the reviews, mark the jobs.

Phones first, then the dashboard habit

Responsiveness is the input most home-services businesses can move fastest. This branch's admin finished around 5 pm, and by the follow-up call, after-hours calls were forwarded to an answering service. Google also points to message leads, and booking leads where available, for nights and weekends when nobody can answer. We also told the team to review call recordings, so they could hear how leads were handled and coach from it. Google records phone leads in the US and Canada, and customers are told before the call connects.

Then keep the lead list honest. Mark leads Booked or Completed: Mark Booked in the Local Services inbox (US and Canada), or the lead status on the Google Ads Leads page after migration. Google reassesses charged leads for 30 days and credits poor-quality, duplicate or invalid ones automatically. If you think a lead was poor quality, say so in its feedback survey. Save that for leads that were poor quality, not every customer who chose someone else.

The takeaways

  • LSA rank comes from bid plus profile quality: rating, review count, response time, images and verification.
  • Missed calls may hurt responsiveness. Cover after-hours calls and turn on message leads.
  • Mark leads Booked and Completed. Google says it helps its systems optimize, not that it sets your rank.
  • Flag genuinely poor-quality leads in the feedback survey. Credits cover poor quality, duplicate and invalid leads.

Common questions

How does Google rank Local Services Ads?

Through an auction that weighs your bid and your overall profile quality. Google lists rating, number of reviews, average response time, use of high-quality images and completed verification checks as profile quality factors, and says higher-quality profiles may rank higher and may pay lower costs per lead. Responsiveness to inquiries, the context of the search (service, time, location) and how relevant your business is also count.

Does marking leads as booked improve Local Services Ads ranking?

Google doesn't say that. Its Google Ads Help page on pay-per-lead goals says marking leads Booked or Completed helps Google's automated systems optimize your campaign performance over time and helps you organize your workflow. Its Local Services ad rankings page doesn't mention booking rate or lead status as a ranking factor.

Do missed calls hurt Local Services Ads?

They can. Google's ad rankings page says missed calls may negatively affect your responsiveness, and responsiveness is part of the auction. Google also says a consistently fast response time could improve your ad's ranking. Turning on message leads, or booking leads where available, gives customers a way to reach you when you can't answer, especially nights and weekends.

Do reviews affect Local Services Ads ranking?

Yes. Google's Local Services Help says star ratings and number of reviews affect how your business is ranked within Local Services Ads. Customer reviews are managed through Google Business Profile, not the Local Services Ads account.

Can I get credited for a bad Local Services Ads lead?

Google reassesses charged leads over 30 days and automatically credits leads it finds poor quality, duplicate or invalid. If you think a lead was poor quality, you can say so in that lead's feedback survey, which Google also uses to improve its models. Lead credits aren't available for health care verticals, tax specialists or advertisers in EMEA.

Sourced from the field, checked against Google. The advice comes from a mentoring call with a roofing and exteriors franchise branch, anonymized, held before its first lead arrived, plus the follow-up call where after-hours calls were being forwarded to an answering service. The auction, profile quality factors, responsiveness, missed calls, search context, nights-and-weekends message leads and one ad per query across locations are from Google's Local Services Help page About ad rankings. Fast response time and ranking, and call recording in the US and Canada, are from Manage leads and jobs. Reviews are from Reviews and Ratings on Local Services Ads. Booked and Completed statuses are from Google Ads Help, About goals and leads for pay-per-lead goals, and Mark Booked from View reports on Local Services Ads. Credits and the feedback survey are from How leads work. Bidding after migration is from Local Services Ads transition to Performance Max campaigns with pay-per-lead goals. No client data used.
