If you run ads for a business where most leads come in by phone, home services, clinics, law firms, trades, your highest-intent conversions are probably invisible in Google Ads. Not because tracking is hard, but because Google treats a call from your ad and a call from your website as two entirely separate things, and most accounts only ever set up one of them.
Two calls, two tracking systems
A call from the ad is a tap on the call button of a call asset or a call-only ad. Turn on call reporting and Google assigns a forwarding number; calls over your minimum length count as conversions. Most accounts have this, sometimes without realising it.
A call from your website is the one that goes missing. Someone clicks your ad, lands on your site, and dials the number in your header. To Google that conversion does not exist unless you have installed a conversion tag and a second snippet that swaps your real number for a Google forwarding number. Almost nobody installs it. So the phone rings, the job gets booked, and the reporting shows nothing.
Why the gap is expensive, not just annoying
This is not only a reporting blind spot. Smart Bidding optimizes toward the conversions it can see. If your form fills are tracked and your calls are not, the algorithm concludes that the keywords, times, and audiences driving your calls simply do not convert, and it quietly shifts budget away from them. You end up training the machine to defund the exact traffic booking your revenue. The same logic that makes a bid strategy only as good as the goal it is fed applies here: feed it half your conversions and it optimizes for half your business.
How to set it up properly
- Turn on call reporting so calls from your call assets and call-only ads are measured with a Google forwarding number.
- Install the website call snippet. Add the conversion tag plus the number-swap snippet so calls from the number on your site also route through a forwarding number and fire a conversion.
- Set a minimum call length, usually 30 to 60 seconds, so a three-second misdial does not get counted as a lead and inflate your data.
- Let the account rebalance. Once calls are visible, give Smart Bidding time to relearn and move budget back toward the traffic that actually produces booked calls.
None of this is exotic. It is the same discipline as reconciling every platform number back to what really happened, which is why Google, Meta, and your CRM disagree on conversions, and why a strong-looking conversion rate on low volume can still be hiding the truth. If the phone is your funnel, it belongs in the conversion column.
The takeaways
- Calls from ads and calls from your website are separate conversion sources with separate setups.
- Website calls stay untracked unless you install the conversion tag plus a Google forwarding-number snippet.
- Untracked calls make Smart Bidding shift budget away from your best, highest-intent leads.
- Turn on call reporting, add the website call snippet, and set a 30 to 60 second minimum call length.
