An ideal customer profile (ICP) is a precise description of the companies and people most likely to become high-value, long-retaining customers. It is the filter that decides who your ads and outreach should reach, and who they should ignore.
ICP versus a persona
An ICP defines the account: industry, size, region, tech stack, the trigger that creates need. A persona describes the human inside it: role, goals, objections. You target the ICP to find the right companies and speak to the persona to convert the right people, and B2B campaigns that blur the two waste budget on the wrong accounts.
Why a sharp ICP lowers cost
A loose ICP invites cheap, off-fit leads that inflate your true CAC. A sharp one, expressed through targeting facets on LinkedIn or a seed list for a lookalike, concentrates spend on accounts that actually close. For outbound, the ICP is also where a single message splits into per-persona angles.
