What is Dynamic Creative?

Dynamic creative automatically combines your headlines, images, videos, and descriptions into many ad variations and serves the best-performing mixes per person. As of June 2024 Meta says it may no longer be available when creating new Sales or App promotion ad sets, and recommends the flexible ad format instead; the principle, supply assets and let Meta combine them, is the same.

How it works

You supply the raw assets and Meta assembles and tests combinations (today usually through the flexible ad format, which Meta recommends in place of dynamic creative), learning which mix works for whom. It scales creative testing without building every permutation by hand, and it feeds the delivery system more signal to optimize on.

The trade-off

Because the platform decides the combinations, per-asset reporting is murkier, so you learn what is working less precisely than a controlled A/B test. Use dynamic creative to find winners at scale, and a structured test when you need a clean read on one variable.

Where dynamic creative stands now

Meta's own wording is that, as of June 2024, you may no longer be able to turn on dynamic creative when creating ad sets with the Sales or App promotion objective; existing campaigns that use it are unaffected for now, and Meta recommends the flexible ad format instead. Flexible lets you add up to 10 images and videos to one ad, and the delivery system chooses the format per placement and person. Two limits catch people out: dynamic creative does not work with multi-language ads, asset customization or political ads, and with it switched on you cannot select WhatsApp Status as a placement.

The common mistake is reading a winning combination as proof that one asset works. Results are reported in aggregate, and if Optimize creative for each person is also on, Meta may crop, recolor, swap text between fields or turn images into video, so what served is not exactly what you uploaded. We use combination formats to find direction at volume, then confirm the winning hook or visual in a controlled A/B test before we build the next round of creative around it.

Common questions

What is dynamic creative on Meta?

A feature that combines your supplied headlines, images, videos, and text into many variations and serves the best-performing combinations per user, automating creative testing.

Is dynamic creative the same as an A/B test?

No. Dynamic creative optimizes combinations automatically but gives murkier per-asset reads. An A/B test isolates one variable for a clean, controlled result.

Is dynamic creative still available in Meta?

Partly. As of June 2024, Meta says you may no longer be able to use dynamic creative when creating ad sets with the Sales or App promotion objective, while existing campaigns using it are unaffected for now. Meta recommends the flexible ad format to get a similar result.

What is the difference between dynamic creative and the flexible ad format?

Dynamic creative mixes your individual elements (images, videos, headlines, text) into ad variations. The flexible ad format lets you add up to 10 images and videos in one ad, and Meta picks the format, such as single image, video or carousel, per placement and person. It is available for Traffic, Engagement, Sales and App promotion campaigns.

Can you use dynamic creative for split testing?

Meta does not recommend it. Dynamic creative reports aggregate performance across all variations, so it cannot give a clean read on a single variable. Use an A/B test for that.
